About Alabama Bats: Sixteen species of bats are found in Alabama. Some of
these are year-round residents, while others simply migrate through the
state. Two of these species that are commonly found in Alabama are the gray
bat and the Indiana bat, which are listed as endangered species by the
U.S. Department of the Interior. Bats emit high frequency sound pulses
(humans cannot hear them) at a rate of 3 to 500 per second. By listening
to their echoes, they can see with their ears. Alabama bats breed in the
autumn and hibernate in caves, buildings, and occasionally may wonder
into your home in the winter. All bats found in Alabama eat insects. So
before winter they must find a warm place that provides insects
otherwise they have to eat off their stored fat reserves.
